Kevin Barker’s practice focuses on complex civil litigation with a special emphasis on business disputes and commercial real estate matters. He frequently represents clients in high-stakes litigation concerning the ownership, control, and management of companies, property, and other assets.
Mr. Barker is a strategic, results-oriented litigator who has obtained emergency injunctive relief for his clients, won numerous favorable rulings at the initial pleadings and summary judgment stages of litigation, and has secured judgments and awards in his clients’ favor at trial, on appeal, and in arbitration.
Mr. Barker has extensive litigation experience in state and federal court. His experience includes corporate control fights, business breakups, derivative shareholder lawsuits, fiduciary duty disputes, declaratory judgment actions, fraud and tortious interference claims, conversion actions, contract disputes, and trade secrets and intellectual property matters. He also has substantial appellate experience and has won appeals in the Court of Special Appeals of Maryland and the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.
Mr. Barker also maintains a business law and real estate transactional practice. He counsels clients in connection with the acquisition, disposition, leasing, and management of real estate assets; the purchase and sale of businesses; the formation of business organizations; and the negotiation, interpretation, and implementation of articles of incorporation, corporate bylaws, and limited liability company (LLC) and partnership agreements.
Mr. Barker understands business and finance in a way that separates him from other lawyers and benefits his litigation and transactional clients alike. He has experience advising corporate executives regarding the management, financing, and operation of business interests. Outside of the legal practice, he is an investor in a digital publishing company that produces content focused on television and travel, acquires other digital publishers through leveraged buyouts, and reaches an audience of more than 10 million monthly consumers.
Prior to joining BBS&G, Mr. Barker served as a law clerk to the Honorable Robert G. James, then-Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana. In law school, he was the editor in chief of the Administrative Law Review.
